The Business and Industry Major Group pointed out that business innovation is an effective way to solve the problem of plastic pollution. In the ensuing discussion, participants highlighted the need to: strike a balance between the ambition of public appeals and the pragmatic actions proposed by industry; ensure the accountability of the new treaty; address the plastic medical waste problem in low-income countries; urgently launch a strong public awareness strategy; and safeguard the interests of informal waste pickers. They also called for: the inclusion of indigenous peoples in the process; ensuring common global rules and standards for reducing plastic production; further stakeholder interactive dialogue throughout the Commission negotiation process; and a solid scientific basis to inform the negotiations.
